SAT and ACT Test Prep FAQs

How is test prep for standardized tests like SAT or ACT different from studying for tests in school?

Test prep for standardized tests focuses more on skills and test strategy rather than test content.  There is no way to predict the content of the questions on the SAT or ACT, which can range from astronomy to linguistics.  This means traditional “studying” isn’t the best approach.

To get the best possible score on the SAT or ACT, students should instead focus on the skills each test covers and how to develop effective strategies for the different question types that are used to access those skills.

My student struggles with standardized tests?  How can you help?

Each student I work with is unique.  Even students who are great at the skills, reading, grammar and science, struggle with standardized tests.  Learning to manage test time, avoid distractor answers and maintain focus across the test are all essential to getting the best score each student can achieve.  These are skills that are not directly taught in schools.

I assess each student at the start of our tutoring relationship and then create an individualized plan to help them not only get to know the test they plan to take but to also develop those critical testing skills.

Do you use packaged test materials?

No, I customize the preparation materials for each student.  I use a mixture of materials from the official test companies, recognized publishers/providers and materials I create to help students to improve their skills and practice the strategies that work best for them.

My student has already taken the SAT or ACT and wants to improve their score. Can you help?

Working with students who have already taken the test and are looking for score improvement requires targeted assessment.  I help students identify areas for the greatest chance of improvement and then clarify what skills need more focus and what additional strategies students should try to maximize the number of questions they can get right to get that goal score.

My student performs well academically.  Why would they need a SAT/ACT test prep tutor?

Not all students need SAT or ACT test prep tutoring.  If the student is motivated and disciplined, there are many high-quality self-study programs available online.  Respected publishers also offer in-person and online courses for test preparation.

The biggest advantage I offer students is that tutoring sessions with me are focused solely on what each student needs, rather than course that needs to cover materials and skills for a larger group of students.

Do you guarantee that my student’s SAT/ACT score will improve with tutoring?

I know many companies promise a specific score improvement by using their preparation program. I don’t offer guarantees but instead focus on ensuring that students are well prepared to do their best on the test by giving them the confidence and skills to maximize their scores.  Sometimes this means working with students to see if another test might better fit their skills.
